Xiang Cao (Hawk) was a graduate student in Georgia Tech Music Technology program from 2007 to 2009. Before this, he got his bachelor of engineering in Computer Science from Zhejiang University, China. With the passion in the combination of computer science and music, he developed several pieces of professional music software in college including Virtual Musical Instrument, AirRack, Maize Studio and Maize Sampler. Some of them are still selling and maintained by him.
As one of the first class students in GTCMT, Hawk worked with professor Gil Weinberg on the mobile music application (ZooZBeat and ZooZControl) when the iPhone is just launched. He also worked with professor Jason Freeman on the sonic generator concerts. In the last year of his master program, Hawk worked with professor Parag Chordia on MIR research and finished his thesis named "Automatic Accompaniment of Vocal Melodies in the Context of Popular Music". This thesis research later turns into a commercial product "LaDiDa" of the company "Khush" which he co-founded in 2009.
After graduated from Georgia Tech, Hawk moved to the Silicon Valley to find out what is the secret behind a good product. He worked for Digidesign, a division of Avid Technology, Inc where he learnt the technologies behind the industry standard recording software "ProTools". Thanks to the experience in GTCMT, Hawk is now working for Apple on their iOS apps such as "iBooks", "Remote" and "iTunes Movie Trailer".
