Gregoire Tronel graduated from California State University Northridge with a Bachelor's degree in Physics and a minor in Mathematics. During his REU at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he experienced the science of sound and music with an in-depth investigation of the modal vibrations of a particular membrane using near-field acoustic holography techniques, and wrote his first research paper entitled Near-Field Acoustic Holography: The Frame Drum.
Aiming to combine his passion for science with his life-long study of rhythm through practice of percussion instruments, Gregoire is now a first year master student in Music Technology at the GTCMT. He is involved with the Music Intelligence Group supervised by Dr. Chordia where he focuses on an artificial percussive model for tabla improvisation. His main interest revolves around modeling musical creativity, music information retrieval, digital signal processing, interactive musical technologies and rhythm perception.
